Manga Review: Spiral: the Bonds of Reasoning volume 11

Spiral: the Bonds of Reasoning volume 11

Story - Kyo Shirodaira
Art - Eita Mizuno
Rating - Teen

Originally running for 15 volumes in Japan, Spiral: the Bonds of Reasoning follows the story of Ayumu Narumi as he attempts to solve the mystery behind a group of children with cat-like eyes referred to as the “Blade Children”. The series went on to achieve some measure of popularity before being licensed by Tokyopop. Eventually, they dropped the title without having published a single volume, allowing Yen Press to pick it up.

As stated above, Ayumu Narumi’s search for the Blade Children is the primary focus of the series, as they may hold the only clues as to the whereabouts of his brother. Eventually they do cross paths and discover that Ayumu may be the only person that can save them from outside forces that would sooner see them destroyed.

In this volume, we catch up with Ayumi as he recovers from a battle with rival and Blade Childe Kanon. Unfortunately, that’s really all this volume gives us as the bulk of it focuses on Ayumu in the hospital as he tries to sort out the growing mysteries of the Blade Children and who is pulling their strings. There are some interesting tidbits laid out as to their possible reason for existing, integrating religious mythology into the mix. The introduction of this new plot point adds layers to the series and opens the story up for further development.

While this volume marks the beginning of a new arc, it’s hardly the perfect jumping on point. Those who have followed the story from the beginning will find much to enjoy here as new revelations are sure to keep them intrigued. Everyone else would be better off starting from the beginning as you are unlikely to understand the major revelations uncovered
