Starcraft Ghost Academy Volume 1

Starcraft Ghost Academy Volume 1

Story: Keith R.A. Decandido
Art: Fernando Heinz Furukawa
Rating: Older Teen

The original Starcraft game has spawned several sequels and prequels spread over the course of a wide variety of media. Ghost Academy is a sequel to a sequel in a sense as it takes place after the novelization of Starcraft Ghost.

Ghost Academy follows a group of five “Ghost Cadets”, each one gifted with unique powers and abilities, as they train for the position of “Ghost”. Among them is Nova Terra, a promising new recruit whose PI(short for Psi) score of 10 makes her a force to be reckoned with among the other trainees. That coupled with her natural physical capabilities put her at the top of her class. Her only weakness is that she has a habit of disobeying orders from her team leader.

While Nova takes up most of the spotlight, the book has its share of supporting characters that bring multiple dynamics to the story. Tosh is the team leader whose origins are similar to Nova’s but only briefly hinted at, Kath is the pseudo lieutenant of the team, and Lio is the drugged out of his mind addict that constantly fails at everything he does. The newest recruit is Aal, a cocky privileged teen whose skills and behind the scenes pull put him at odds with the rest of the team.

As far as story goes, the first volume sets things up nicely with several plot points overlapping. Since this is the introduction of the series, character development is the key focus here with hints of a greater story thrown in.

With an already established fanbase, engaging characters, and enough sci-fi lingo to make even a trekkie’s head spin, Starcraft Ghost Academy is blasting off to an excellent start.
